SuperSiv™ molecular sieve bags are filled with high quality molecular sieve beads and offer the user the opportunity to reduce the relative humidity of any sealed headspace right down to 0% RH (as opposed the 5% RH end-point that you can achieve with silica gel). Our molecular sieve bags are constructed from tyvek and can be filled with 3A, 4A, 5A or 10A (aka 13X) molecular sieve beads, depending on your wishes.
SuperSiv™ is a desiccant just like silica gel, but unlike silica gel it is far more effective at lower relative humidities . Typically you should consider using SuperSiv™ in preference to silica gel products such as SuperDryPak™ at humidities less than 30%. You should definitely use SuperSiv™ at relative humidities lower than 5%, as Silica Gel will be ineffective.
Please note that in the 5-30% humidity bracket, there will be a trade off between the advantage of SuperSiv™ with its rapid and aggressive uptake of moisture, and SuperDryPak™ with its lower affinity for moisture, but with its higher total moisture capacity. Typically, silica gel will adsorb at least 35% of its own weight in moisture, whereas SuperSiv™ will adsorb a maximum of 22%.
Ultimately which product you use will depend on a number of factors such as; how often you can afford to change the desiccant component and how much physical space there is in your product’s packaging. There is no right or wrong answer here, only the correct solution for your specific needs.
